Swartwood Cemetery:

Robert Swartwood, in his book "The Swartwood Sojourn 1575-1997", refers to it as the lost cemetery and I fear it may be lost forever as the state is purchasing surrounding properties.  The area is in a floodplain. Robert Swartwood visited the cemetery in 1986.  Eleven years earlier (May 1975), Joseph and Doris Boyd copied the information from the tombstones.  The three of us (Kathy, Mary & Roberta) were there October 1999.

The cemetery is located on Swartwood Road off Route 223/224.  Coming from Erin, we entered Swartwood Road on the left,  just after Austin Hill Road.  The road was blocked due to the bridge being closed.  A young fella who lived in the trailer next to the creek was kind enough to take us to the cemetery or we would not have found it.   We walked across the bridge, kept to the right and followed the creek about 400 feet. The area was overgrown with brush and briars.  It was necessary to cross a narrow brook, a bit muddy for tennis shoes.  Mary was the smart one and wore boots. At this point we walked in brush over 6 foot and emerged in an open pasture where horses were grazing. We were told a bear was also in the area but we probably scared it away with all our laughing and carrying on.  We had to climb over a fence and through thorn bushes before reaching the cemetery.  It was sad to see that the cemetery had been neglected all these years.  A link to the cemetery has been provided.
